The Iron Queen Mine, Orogrande, NM.
The Iron Queen mine is located at LAT N32.42263° LONG W106.12415°.
What do we know about the Iron Queen? Well, not much, as usual. This mine is most prominately listed as the Iron Queen on almost any USGS map. There are signs that this mine was very productive at one time based on the tunnel system and railroad system used at the mine. The railroad spur actually came all the way to the mine at one time as there must have been hundreds of thousands of tons of iron ore coming out of this mine during it's peek production.
This mine has a large quantity of iron and iron based ores but we were unable to find any data on MINDAT other than it may or may not have been called the Iron Mask at one time.
This mine is recommended for closure by the BLM AML program in the most recent EA study. There are no noticeable shafts in this complex and improvements seem to consist of tunnels only.
Legal stuff: We are interested in the mining history of New Mexico but, we, at the Raging Main, do not encourage nor do we recommend for anyone to venture into any mines, shafts or caves...neither does the BLM Abandoned Mine Lands Cleanup Program. Mines are killers and many hazards exist...If you have questions about mine safety please go to: http://www.blm.gov/aml/.
