| Fort Selden |
 |
Fort Selden was established on the Rio Grande in present day Radium Springs, New Mexico in 1865 to defend the Mesilla Valley against Apache raids and desperados. The site is on an ancient Indian campground and a crossing point for Spanish caravans headed across the Jornada del Muerto, or "Journey of Death.
One of the most famous residents of Fort Selden was General Douglas MacArthur who spent several years at here as a child, while his father, Arthur MacArthur, was the Commanding Officer. Also stationed here were the Buffalo Soldiers.
The post was constructed of adobe with the exception of the Administration Building. (Hits: 1001)
