Charleston Mine, Orogrande, NM
The Charleston mine is located at LAT N 32° 25' 39.534" LONG W 106° 6' 25.627"
What do we know about the Charleston Mine? Well, not much. This mine may indeed be known by other names but the map reference we found called it the Charleston. There are signs that this mine was very productive at one time based on the tunnel system and mining car system that was used in the mine.
This mine seems to have a large quantity of Pyrite, Turquoise, Copper and Iron but we were unable to find any data on MINDAT other than it may or may not have been called the Charleston.
This mine, if it is indeed the Charleston, is scheduled for closure by the BLM AML program and with good reason. There are several open shafts in this complex and they seem to be 100+ feet in depth.
Legal stuff: We are interested in the mining history of New Mexico but, we, at the Raging Main, do not encourage nor do we recommend for anyone to venture into any mines, shafts or caves...neither does the BLM Abandoned Mine Lands Cleanup Program. Mines are killers and many hazards exist...If you have questions about mine safety please go to: http://www.blm.gov/aml/.
